Prune Orientations
Discard particles from over-represented views to obtain a more balanced stack that can improve the anisotropy of your map.
Tackle preferred orientation
Removes over-represented views identified to balance orientations.
Interactive visualization
Inspect the angualr distribution before and after the run.
What it does
When one orientation dominates a dataset, adding more particles does not help. The reconstruction is driven by the direction with the most views, and the directions that are missing stay missing, so the map keeps its distortion however many particles are thrown at it.
Prune Orientations discards particles from the over-represented views to rebalance the stack and mitigate the effects of preferred orientation.
How it works
The job identifies which views are over-represented and balances them, keeping a subset that covers the sphere as evenly as the data allows. Angular distribution plots are produced before and after, so the change is visualized.
A smaller balanced stack can produce a better map than a larger skewed one, because reconstruction quality depends on the direction that is least represented, not on the total count.
Run alongside Anisotropy Analysis, it lets you quantify the impact of pruning on your maps anisotropy.

Left, heat plot indicates oerrepresented views at the bottom. Right, the over-represented view has been thinned, so the angular coverage is more even.
Where it sits
Pruning follows 3D refinement and anisotropy analysis, which indicate whether preferred orientation is present in your sample.
It is a processing-side mitigation, not a cure. If the specimen only ever adopts one orientation on the grid, the durable fixes are at the bench and the microscope. Pruning makes the most of the data you already have.
